What Is ATS and Why Does It Matter?
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software companies use to automatically filter job applications before a recruiter ever sees them. Research shows over 75% of resumes are rejected at this stage. It does not matter how qualified you are — if the algorithm filters you out, no human will review your application.
Use the Exact Keywords From the Job Posting
ATS systems match your resume against the job description word for word. If the posting says "project management" and your resume says "managing projects," it may not count as a match. Copy exact phrases from the job description and use them verbatim in your bullets and skills section. This single change has the biggest impact on your score.
Avoid Tables, Columns, and Graphics
Tables, multi-column layouts, text boxes, and graphics all confuse ATS parsers. The system reads your resume as plain text and anything inside a table may be completely skipped. Use a clean single-column format. Your contact info, experience, education, and skills should flow top to bottom with no fancy layout.
Use Standard Section Headings
ATS systems look for specific section names. Stick to: Work Experience, Education, Skills, Summary, and Certifications. Creative names like "My Journey" or "What I Bring" confuse the parser and your content gets ignored. Standard headings ensure every section gets read correctly.
Spell Out Abbreviations
Always write both the full term and the abbreviation: "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)", "Customer Relationship Management (CRM)". This ensures your resume matches whether the recruiter searches by abbreviation or full term. Missing this is a common reason resumes get filtered for roles the candidate is fully qualified for.
Save as .docx or Plain PDF
Submit your resume as a .docx or a simple PDF with selectable text. Scanned PDFs, image-based PDFs, and fancy designer formats often fail to parse correctly. When in doubt, .docx is the safest format for ATS compatibility.
