Reason 1: ATS Is Filtering You Out Before a Human Sees Your Resume
This is the number one reason. Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems that automatically reject resumes that do not match enough keywords from the job description. You could be perfectly qualified and still get filtered out because you used different wording. Fix this by mirroring the exact language from each job posting in your resume bullets and skills section.
Reason 2: Your Resume Is Not Tailored to Each Job
Sending the same generic resume to every job is one of the most common mistakes. ATS systems score your match percentage against that specific job description. A resume with a 40% keyword match gets rejected; one with 75% gets through. You need to adjust your skills and summary for each application — it sounds like a lot but takes only 5-10 minutes.
Reason 3: Formatting Is Breaking the ATS Parser
Tables, two-column layouts, headers and footers, and text boxes often cause ATS systems to misread or skip sections of your resume. Your contact information in a header box might be invisible to the parser. Your skills listed in a table might be completely missed. Switch to a simple single-column format.
Reason 4: Your Resume Summary Is Too Generic
Most resume summaries say things like "results-driven professional with strong communication skills." Every recruiter reads hundreds of these. Your summary should contain the job title you are applying for and 2-3 specific quantified achievements. Generic summaries signal a generic candidate.
Reason 5: Missing Quantified Achievements
Bullets that say "responsible for managing a team" tell recruiters nothing. Bullets that say "managed a team of 8 engineers, delivering 3 product launches under budget" are memorable and searchable. Go through every bullet on your resume and add a number, percentage, or dollar figure wherever possible.
Reason 6: Applying to the Wrong Level of Roles
If you are applying to senior roles without senior-level keywords, or junior roles with an overqualified-looking resume, ATS will flag the mismatch. Make sure the seniority of your language matches the level of the role.
